There are times in life, times so different, that they are surreal. We have trouble accepting the situation and our mind treats it almost like a dream. This weekend was going to be a totally surreal weekend.

You can call me Degas. I'm divorced, in my mid 50s, live in the Midwest, not particularly good-looking (It'd help if I dropped about 25 pounds). I don't make a lot of money, and have never been on anything that resembled an exotic vacation. Only time out of the country was a couple trips that went through Canada. (Did stop at Niagara Falls).

And yet, I was on a plane heading across the Atlantic for an all-expense paid weekend in Amsterdam. How did I manage this? It was a contest I entered almost as an afterthought. It was a story writing contest: an erotic story writing contest. And I won. Actually I was one of five winners who were all on their way to Amsterdam. "The 982nd Sexiest Man in Toledo, Ohio" - that was my story. It had been a fun story to write - a tricky balance of the humorous and erotic. And now I was heading to Amsterdam.
