EIGHT AND A HALF MONTHS

My husband and I met during a junior year internship. We moved in together after a few weeks. It was a combination of things, including being madly in love and lust. In June, we had a quick wedding at the courthouse. I wanted to defy my parents, who were opposed to my marrying before finishing my studies. We went a little too fast, maybe, but it has worked out.

We did not worry too much about the senior year, we planned that one of us would transfer to the other's school. That was a mistake. We found all kinds of problems with missed deadlines, requirements, and different programs. Until early August, we thought that sympathetic admissions officers would smooth the path for us. It came as a shock when the final negative phone call came.

We had to make some decisions in a hurry and perhaps we did not think or talk things through as carefully as we should have. We decided that nine months was not long compared to a lifetime together, and to finish our studies. My husband would return to the East coast for his final year, which I would spend at my West coast school. Our finances were a disaster (my parents had cut me off, his had no money) but we figured we could get together for Christmas and Spring breaks.

It was only the very last week that we got around to talking about sex ...
