It was three months later that my feature article on Charleston appeared in the magazine. I thought it was a fine story; not my finest work, but it shed the city in a very positive light.

I may have underestimated the influence of my own work.

Bob Piotrowski, the editor and owner of the magazine, called me into his office a month after the magazine hit the newsstands. "Kaz, the Charleston Chamber of Commerce wants to throw a parade in your honor?"

"What?"

"In the past month, inquiries to the Charleston Tourist Board have increased ten-fold. The Civic Center has booked four major conventions, bringing thousands and thousands of visitors to the city and to the hotels. That means millions of dollars."

"Wow." There was movement in my pants. I was certain that Carolina Campbell Callaway, VP of the Chamber of Commerce was behind this. I tried to hide the smile on my face. My brain was humming ‘nothing could be finer . . .'

"Kaz, you can't accept their offer. It would look like we were accepting favors in exchange for writing positive stories. The next thing you know, those favors will come to us before the articles are written or ...
