The Breeding Programme

The year is 2030. In 2023, a virus swept the globe. Initially resembling the common cold, it seemed relatively innocuous until a week later. This "flu" gained the nickname of the Black Widow virus. It killed 99.999% of the male population, and the key to immunity came down to three genes on the X chromosome. As females have two sets of them, they were automatically immune due to having all the firepower of these genes in two sets. TM-57A, TX-31B and TT-81C were responsible for creating an immune system response to this virus, stopping it in its tracks within 72 hours. Males with exceptionally strong examples of these genes, plus a fourth, YT-31D granted these rare individuals the defences necessary to kill it. As a result, the surviving males were placed in cyro stasis until it could be determined how to eradicate this virus via vaccination and/or gene therapy.

To those rare males around the world that awoke from cryo stasis 7 years later, it seemed to them as if only a single day had passed. This story follows five of these males. To help them transition into what would be a very different world, each of them was assigned personal assistants. Initially a nurse to check their health, a psychologist to check their mental health, and two more if required for the transition and integration to a new society.

Ryan Daniels was the youngest of the Australian survivors. Academically very gifted, but physically scrawny, nobody would have picked him to be one of the lucky ones to survive. Yet he was a genetic anomaly in many ways. Triple density bones, zero allergies, perfect 20/20 vision, and an immune system that grabbed the Black Widow Virus and crushed it like an egg under a sledgehammer. Before he went into cryo stasis, the researchers were very interested in the antibodies his immune system had generated. His was the most powerful response they'd ever seen.

Ryan awoke in what resembled a hospital ward. A nurse wearing a lab coat walked in to greet him. "Good morning Mr Daniels, good to see you're awake?"

"Where am I?"

"You're in an isolation ward of Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth. You've been in cryo stasis for 7 years. The date is July 12th, 2030."

"2030?!"

"Sorry you were out for that long, but the black Widow virus took its toll on the male population. You're one of the .001% of the male population that survived. We had to protect you and the few like you until we could come up with some way of halting this virus. We were too late to save most, but you will find that society has changed a little since."

"My family?"

"Your mother and sister are still here, but sadly your father and brother didn't make it."

"Thanks for the information, but this is taking me a little to process."

"Of course. Feel free to ask me anything you like, and for anything you need. I've been assigned as your chief assistant. Nothing is too much to ask, absolutely nothing."

"I hope this doesn't sound wrong, but I could really use a hug."

"Not at all. I'm Nurse Janine Smith by the way."

Janine held Ryan in a warm hug, her ample breasts threatening to smother his face. For a moment he felt himself break down and cry. At first just a light sniffle, which ramped up to an ugly, heaving grief. "I'm sorry for your loss Ryan, and we will do everything we can to get you through this."

"We?"
