We never really know why, and/or what, cosmic forces conspire against us to bring distinctly unique and dissimilar events into play and deliver a "sucker punch" to our well ordered existence. Some might call it fate, while others prefer to chalk it up to destiny, but frankly I've never been able to distinguish a difference between the two. After pondering the existential aspects of this complex and admittedly confusing fact of our existence, I've come to a very sound and logical conclusion; shit happens! Not only does it happen, it happens all the time! Which brings us to this point in my life. I'd been working in San Francisco for six weeks heading up a joint technical project with a local firm. My company originally told me that I would only be there for two to three weeks in order to iron out the higher level project details, but as high tech projects go we kept running into design issue stumbling blocks. As a senior engineer and the lead, I was expected to smooth out the technical rough spots, make certain everyone was on the same sheet of music, and coordinate both groups efforts. Of course, my first mistake in the ongoing debacle was telling my girlfriend that I would only be away for three weeks max. That particular faux pas quickly came back to bite me in the ass when, at the end of six weeks, I was in the unenviable position of informing her, that the company had decided to extend my assignment another sixty days. As one might imagine, she did not take the news well. In fact, Margret had a royal bitch fit! The screaming stopped after she slammed the phone receiver down, hanging up on me. Apparently, from what I could gather, between the fits of screaming and cursing, this had totally disrupted her plans to attend a three day music festival in a couple of weeks, which she had purchased tickets for.
