3 Leap of faith

Harold's burial was a simple affair. Roland and two other men from the castle dug the grave in the small plot behind the chapel. Father Eugene said the words promising resurrection and life everlasting. Meg watched in stony silence as the shrouded body was lowered into the ground next to her mother's grave. Ten minutes later, it was over. The two men returned to the castle and the priest departed to the chapel in order to hear confessions. It was lent after all.

Roland returned with Meg to the tavern and they sat at the same table the first night he'd arrived. He guessed Meg suffered in silence. There were no tears, just an aching emptiness somewhere within the girl with too much to do and too little time to do it in.

"I'm sorry about your father. I lost mine some years ago. It's hard."

She looked at him for a long time before she finally spoke. "Why did you come here?"

"To get a job with my kinsman."
