My wife Carmen is the classic story of a late bloomer. The first girl in her class to get tall and the last one to develop breasts, she stood 5'8 in only the 7th grade and would add on another 2 inches before she finally stopped growing. She was quite skinny as well and as if all that wasn't enough, she was biracial. The product of a Jewish mother and Jamaican father who died when she was only a toddler. Her mother remarried a decent and solid man but a white couple raising a mixed race daughter did not come without some difficulties.

As a result she was stuck in that in-between world, too white for the black kids, not white enough for preppy girls. Her hair was neither kinky or straight, she had a slight aquiline Jewish nose but her lips were all black girl. When I look back at her childhood pictures I see a painfully shy girl who wanted to be anonymous, stuck in a body that called attention to itself. It's not that she was ugly -far from it- she was just incredibly unique at an age when most kids want nothing more than to fit in.

Thank god for basketball. It was her saving grace. The girl could flat out play. Clumsy walking around the school hallways, she was somehow graceful on the court. She could run faster than the other girls, taking long strides with her athletic legs. She was incredibly instinctive and of course she could really shoot the ball. Give her an open look and she would burn you every time. She likes to joke that she had scholarship offers before she even had boobs and that's not far ...
