French Air Force Captain Jean-Luc Belmondo adjusted the knot of his fighter pilot's scarf, as he approached the East Prussian campaign airfield where his French squadron was based. Only about an hour or so earlier did he hear the news that Germany had surrendered to the Allied powers, bringing the war in Europe to an end. For him, it was quite a feeling, from one moment still contemplating future combat missions, to suddenly finding himself in peacetime. For the past two years and a half, the young captain had been part of the Free French "Normandie" squadron, sent by General Charles de Gaulle to assist the USSR in its war. Jean-Luc had experienced the war, in all its ups and downs: the challenging acclimatization to the harsh Russian winter, the thrill of his first air combat victory, the long stretches of boredom, both good times and bad.

The tall, dark-haired, blue-eyed Frenchman adjusted his officer's cap, and glanced at his boots, to make sure they were presentable, before walking any further. He straightened his dark-blue French Air Force jacket, with its thin ribbon of decorations he had won, and the shoulder stripes denoting his rank. His fellow French pilots were already out and about. The airfield was nothing but a strip of grass, close to the simple cottages where the pilots were quartered. His trusty Soviet-made Yak-3 aircraft was parked by the rudimentary airstrip, along with the other aircraft, carefully hidden under camouflage nets.
