Chapter 1: Four Victims

FBI Supervisory Special Agent Tom Merkel sat in Sydney Babcock's office on one of two beige armchairs facing her desk. Where other offices in that division of the Behavior Analysis Unit were done in blues and grays, Sydney's office was in quiet shades of beige by her request. It was a cramped but neat office with a long pale oak desk in front of a matching credenza topped with shelves and two armchairs facing the desk. He was surprised to see live plants in the windowless room. They dotted the office landscape in pale blue and light green ceramic pots like colored pearls. They were the only personal touches in the room other than a few photographs arranged on the shelves behind her desk of Sydney with well known people including the President of the United States. That one was taken after she took down a serial killer who killed seven young boys.

Tom's last name was German but he took after his Italian mother with dark hair now glinting with silver and deep brown eyes that were nearly black. He was a big lumbering man, his presence made Sydney's already small office look even smaller as if he were a grown-up sitting amongst children's furniture.

He nervously bounced his leg as he waited. He opened the file on his lap and looked through its contents. It consisted of police reports, photos, and lists of evidence from four murders in the Twin Cities and ...
