Chapter 3: The Dark Blue Van

It wasn't quite 6:00 a.m., the streets were quiet, traffic at a minimum. The air still smelled fresh, the stink of car exhaust and belching factory chimneys still to come. The temperature was cool, hovering just above sixty degrees. Charlie Parker ran along a quiet side street past older single family homes that nearly butted up against the sidewalk on one side and sat atop a small hill on the other. They were well maintained, most owner occupied. She ran east along Lincoln Avenue, past Victorian homes that were renovated so many times over the years their Victorian Stick architectural features all but obliterated with awkwardly built enclosed porches, aluminum siding, and poorly chosen new windows. Oddly the further east she ran, the newer the houses. The generic architecture from the 1950s and 1960s insinuated itself among the older cottages and Depression Era bungalows. That was the neighborhood where she grew up. The streets were like old friends to her, some of the memories her enemies.

She passed her family's old home, a duplex where they moved after her father died in the house fire that destroyed their first family home. Her mother used the money to buy the duplex where Charlie and her three siblings were crowded into a three bedroom flat.
