Chapter 7: The Suspects

Forensics set up a pop-up tent around the body of The Fisherman's latest victim to block it from public view. Uniform cops kept the crowd back that had quickly accumulated despite the early morning hour. Local news trucks were parked across the street, their satellite antennas raised. Reporters were holding microphones and filling time on morning news shows with little information.

Detective Iosefa "Joe" Teo waited at the opening of the tent for the coroner to finish her preliminary examination of the body. The victim's long blonde hair was so streaked with blood it looked like it was dyed pink. Her face was unrecognizable, badly bruised, her eyes swollen shut. Her entire body was horribly bruised and battered. One ankle looked like it was broken because it was almost twisted backwards. Fingers were swollen and misshapen. There were obvious choke marks around her neck where he choked her with something other than his hands, a rope, or a garrote if The Fisherman was following his past MO.

Joe had Detective Charlotte "Charlie" Parker go back to Mariah's apartment to look for any DNA evidence they could use to identify her. They were both certain she was the dead woman left behind the vacant ...
