Chapter 10: The Anchor

The Fisherman Task Force conference room was quiet, the only sound the hissing of the air conditioning. It was early, the rest of the task force just waking up. The gradient sky outside the windows was a gray blue that gradually melded into a light blue and then a pinkish orange. Detective Iosefa "Joe" Teo sat on one of the swivel conference chairs and stared at the whiteboard with the information they had on The Fisherman's four victims and The Fisherman himself.

Joe was a big man, formidable to most suspects with a gentle low voice that witnesses found comforting and women considered sexy. His parents were Samoan and he had the same golden tan skin of his ancestors and could pass for white, Asian, part black, or Hispanic. His hair was naturally wavy and he grew it long, pulled back in a ponytail while he worked. He meticulously maintained a neat goatee and mustache. His eyes were a warm golden brown the color of whiskey that women found mesmerizing. They could crinkle with a smile, impossible to resist, or turn mean and menacing. He had a knack for making people feel safe in his presence and making suspects want to wet their pants. As he sat turning back and forth in the chair while he examined the evidence they had, he looked perplexed, slightly worried.
