Chapter 6: The Suspects

Monday, June 10, 1928

Paulina stepped out the backdoor of the house and breathed in the misty morning air. It was just before dawn, the sun still hidden behind the trees yet its light glowed bright enough to turn the world a hazy gray rather than pitch black. A ghostly mist covered the ground, turning the garden into shadowy shapes. The air was cool, wet, the smell of the nearby lake competing with flowers ready to open to the rising sun.

She walked briskly in the gloom, glad to be hidden in its midst as she made her way to the stable. Stanley, her groom, had just arrived and was mucking out stalls. Freckled Fate was munching on hay in the temporary stall where he was tied while his was being cleaned.

Stanley called good morning in his heavy Polish accent.

Like her, Stanley's name was Americanized but instead of at his spouse's insistence, his name was changed when he was processed on Ellis Island as an immigrant. In Poland it was Stanislaw. She still referred to him by his Polish name, a gesture that always brought a warm smile to his grizzled face.
