Chapter 10: The Neighbor

I woke up to birds chirping outside the bedroom window. A lot of birds. I could hear the waves hitting the shore, the sound calming if it wasn't for the damn birds. I looked at the clock and saw it was 6:00 a.m. I groaned and got up. There was no way the birds were going to let me sleep.

I took a quick shower and went out on the balcony off the bedroom dressed only in my robe. I wanted to get a feel for the temperature. It was early June and anything goes in Wisconsin. It could be forty degrees or a hundred. It just happened to be cool, bordering on cold so I rummaged through my suitcase for a pair of runner's leggings and a long sleeve shirt. I put on socks and my running shoes and went downstairs. I tucked my keys and my phone into the pockets of my leggings then I locked the back door of the cabin and walked down the gravel driveway.

I did some stretching exercises on the way, too chicken to run on gravel because it was too easy to twist an ankle. I got to the main road and started out at a slow jog heading north on Northern Door Road. On my way back to the cabin the day before, I noticed a small park at the curve in the road where Northern Door turns onto Isle View Road. I decided to go investigate.
