MELLORS INTERVIEW

Mellors has been publishing at ES since October 2002, when he delivered "The Pills." Since that time, he has published 26 stories, most as part of five multi-chapter stories. The most recent story was "The Promotion" series. So, who exactly is Mellors? Well, he says, "I'm something of a private person. I'll just say I'm male, almost middle-aged, married with kids."

Q. How and when did you begin writing erotic stories?

A. Actually, the Pills was my very first one! I'd been mulling over some stories in my head for a while and have an active fantasy life. I just sort of dove in with the one that was foremost in my mind.

Q. Have you published anywhere other than ES.com?

A. No. I'm sure copies will show up elsewhere but I prefer to publish here. This is the best ES website I've found.

Q. What is it about writing erotica that you most enjoy?

A. The most satisfying moments for me are when the characters take over the story. Several of my stories -- the Promotion especially -- were outlined as going in very different places than the characters eventually took them.

Q. How much of yourself do you include in your stories?

A. Most are based on my own fantasies although they eventually move way beyond that as they take on lives of their own. There are bits and pieces of real life experiences -- mostly in dialogue and character. The women usually start out as highly exaggerated versions of women I know in RL, but move beyond that.

There's something of a Gary Stuish quality to my male protaganists that I'm slowly trying to move away from. The shyness, awkwardness and cluelessness of my male characters is something they get from me (I didn't even kiss a girl until an embarrassingly late age).

Q. What, if any, difficulties do you face when writing - erotic writing difficulties and general writing difficulties? And how do you overcome them?

A. The biggest difficulty for me is RL. I have a very demanding job and young kids so I get little time to write these days. You'll notice my stories tend to come in bunches. That's usually when I'm on vacation or a long business trip.

Q. How about in more general terms - how do you feel about the "outside world"'s perception of erotic writing?

A. It's funny. If you wrote fantastic stories about violence, no one would mind. But similar stories about sex are regarded as degrading or juvenile. That seems to be changing, which is a good thing.

Q. One thing that I love about ES is that you very quickly build up a community of fans, who enjoy writing to and hearing from their favorite authors. Do you have any favorite topics that have surfaced in these "conversations"?

A. I haven't had many conversations because I tend to lurk and rarely respond to PMs.

Q. How do you feel when you receive negative comments or very low votes from readers?

A. Usually, I ignore it. If one of my stories gets poor marks, I will take constructive criticism. The first chapter of "The Promotion" didn't rate too well so I changed the emphasis in future chapters. But negative comments or low ratings really don't bother me. Not every story on the site turns me on so it's unreasonable to expect everyone to be turned on by my stories. Sometimes, negative feedback can even be amusing when some pop psychology reads its ugly head.

Q. What kind of stories would you never write?

A. The categories forbidden by ES pretty much cover it. I also don't think I could write anything where the characters were humiliated or hurt. I like my characters too much for that.

I might add that erotic stories have a tendency to throw me off with bad anatomy. The most jarring is the depiction of a penis entering the uterus, which would be both impossible and extremely painful. Most flights of fancy I'm fine with, but that one thing will throw me right out of a story.

Q. And do you read, and respond to, other writers on the site? Who are your favorites?

A. I read some, rarely respond but rate often. I tend to like a lot of different things. I like TheSandMan, Raingirl, Pussycat2Kca and JenniferO quite a bit. And you too, of course. :)

Q. Do you remember the first pornography you ever saw?

A. I remember playboys from an early age. I always liked erotic writing. First Penthouse Letters, then the stories on the web. As they say, the brain is the biggest erogenous zone of all.

Q. What's the kinkiest thing you have ever done?

A. Not much, actually! As I said, it took me long time to get going. I have had sex at work a few times (with gf/wife).

Q. How do you feel about same sex relationships, both personally and as a writer?

A. MM relationships don't interest me, although I don't have a problem with them. I've touched a little bit on FF relationships, but not much. In RL, I don't believe in judging consensual activity between adults.

Q. Do you explore these feelings, positive and negative in your stories?

A. I had one FF encounter in Loser no Longer and may have others. The Promotion is kicked off by one woman's husband coming out as gay. I tried very hard to make it clear that this wasn't an anti-gay thing; just an anti-someone-being-a-jerk thing.

Q. How long does it take for you to write a story? Could you talk us through the process?

A. Most of the ideas have been rattling around for a long time before they find silicon. Sometimes the story comes out very quickly (I wrote the Last Ride in about a week). Sometimes, it drags out because of RL and complications. This is the biggest reason Loser No Longer has dragged out over -- what -- eight years? It's gotten so intricate that I really need a few days just to find the threads again.

I start with an outline, then start writing in key scenes when inspiration strikes. There are usually a bunch of stories in various forms of completion. Eventually, one crosses a threshold and I'll hammer it out in a week or so.

Occasionally, the outline breaks down and I have to write it differently than planned. This is why The Promotion is unfinished right now. The original ending was wrong and I came up with half a dozen different ones before the characters led me to the right one. Then RL intervened and it lies mostly finished.

Q. What do you think is the best story you have published here?

A. I really like the second chapter of the Bus Boy, which is also my highest rated. I think it fires on all cylinders. I also like that I finished the damned story, which is more than I can say for three other epics. When I crank out the last chapter of the Promotion, that could become my favorite.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to say to the readers of this interview and your fans? Now is your chance...

A. I don't respond to PMs, but I do read them and I really appreciate the kind words there and on the blog style comments. I know a lot of you are waiting for chapters of your favorites. I have a vacation coming up, so maybe you'll see some more chapters soon
