DARKHORSE INTERVIEW

Darkhorse has publishing at ES for more than a decade now, but it has, he says, been "off and on. I'll write some stories then take a break for a few years and then come back." In that time, he has noticed many changes, but the most pronounced "is the drastic improvement of the quality of stories. When I first started most of the stories were badly written 'Forum letters' of the 'I can't believe this happened to me' type. I'm not saying I was any better but to be different I leaned strongly on the literature side, almost experimental. 'Dirty' and 'Josie' are examples of that.

"Now most of the stories here have actually plots, believable characters and are very well written and professionally publishable. Ironically now I'm leaning strongly on the 'porn' side where the ultimate goal of the story is to make the reader take out her vibrator and climax."

Asked what and when was the first story he published here, Darkhorse laughs "can't remember, too long ago." He doesn't know how many he's published either. "Lost count. Most I delete after a while for various reasons. I'd delete a story if, after coming back to it after a while, it just seems too far fetched or it's so awful it can't be saved even with a rewrite."

Right now he has eleven stories n the site, dating back to 2007, and a typical rewrite is among them. "'Mouthful of cock' is a major rewrite as I thought the original was too far fetched unless you read the ending. When I was reading the first few paragraphs, I couldn't help thinking 'what female cop is ever going to try and get it on with somebody?' So I've rewritten it so from the start the reader is able to guess the ending which explains the actions of the heroine."

Q. Now, is there anything you'd like to tell us about yourself?

I'm liberal when it comes to sex but conservative in other areas.

Q. How and when did you begin writing erotic stories?

Over ten years ago and because it was fun and still is.

Q. Have you published anywhere other than ES.com?

I tried to get published on cleansheets but wasn't ever successful. To get a piece of literature erotica there to me means you've made it.

Q. What is it about writing erotica that you most enjoy?

It makes me horny and if it doesn't, I know I'm doing something wrong. Also knowing that other people get off reading it is a bit of a turn on, especially if I know women are getting off reading it.

Q. What is your favorite category to write in, and why?

Generally I stick to one on one sex as it's what I know. The majority involves sex between strangers which I find a bit of a challenge as sometimes it's difficult to believe that the heroine would have sex with the hero if they barely know each other, and even more challenging if it's in a public place. That's the problem I had with 'Lawschool hijinks,' and the reason I changed it so that the main characters were in a long term relationship.

Q. How much of yourself do you include in your stories?

For better or worse, if the story is written in first person then the main character is me, with embellishments. I might give myself a different profession, marital life, age etc but the personality is still me. And I say 'or worse' because I was rereading one story and thought 'the main character is so arrogant'. I ended up deleting that one.

Q. Is there anything that happens in your stories that you would really like to try in "real life", but haven't yet been able to?

Strip tennis.

Q. Does your partner or any of your friends know that you write?

No.

Q. What, if any, difficulties do you face when writing - erotic writing difficulties and general writing difficulties? And how do you overcome them?

The most difficult part is making it believable and not getting too caught up in your own writing and forgetting you're writing for the reader. With 'Annie,' while it's believable, I think I've done the last two - it's a confessional story and three years after reading it it just seems so self-indulgent.

One trick I've learnt is to convert the story to audio and listen to it. It gives you a whole new perspective.

Q. How about in more general terms - how do you feel about the "outside world"'s perception of erotic writing?

Hypocritical mainly. People talk about it like 'erotica' is good while 'porn' is bad and dirty and that there's something wrong with writing with the goal of getting someone off. To me porn is to erotica as comedy is to humour. What I mean by that is that porn is a subset of erotica. When you write erotica the goal is to arouse but not to necessarily to make the reader orgasm, likewise in humour the aim is to amuse but not necessarily to make the reader laugh out loud. With porn stories the goal is to make the reader come or at least want to come and in comedy it's to make the consumer laugh out loud.

Q. How do you feel when you receive negative comments or very low votes from readers?

I like them better than high votes as I find them more honest. My stories tend to be short (you can read the whole thing in one stroke session), and most people tend to give higher votes to the longer stories.

Q. What kind of stories would you never write?

Gay, as I'm not homosexual, so I'd probably get it completely wrong and writing it wouldn't be a turn on for me.

Q. And do you read, and respond to, other writers on the site? Who are your favorites?

Yes. So far jillbaby is my favorite, but there's others I like.

Q. What's the kinkiest thing you have ever done?

The sex I've had has all be pretty much vanilla.

Q. Do you have any fantasies that you would like to fulfill?

Sex in front of other people.

Q. What is a major turn on for you during sex?

I'm very visual, so seeing my lover naked for the first time is always the major turn on.

Q. How about a major turn off?

Bad smell.

Q. How do you feel about same sex relationships, both personally and as a writer?

I couldn't care less, and think they should have the same rights as everybody else. As a writer, I wouldn't write gay stories for reasons above.

Q. Do you explore these feelings, positive and negative in your stories?

No.

Q. How long does it take for you to write a story? Could you talk us through the process?

I write the story very quickly, but think about it much longer before writing. On average, it might take me less than an hour to write but I'd spend a few days before hand thinking about it.

Q. What do you think is the best story you have published here?

I actually don't have a favorite. I like "Dirty" but can't stand the "I learnt something today" ending, and "Law school hijinks" and "Game set and snatch" are basically the same story. My favorite sex bit so far is in "Game set and snatch" where there's so much cum it drips down from the heroine's pussy and onto the concrete. I don't know, there's just something so arousing about picturing that scene.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to say to the readers of this interview and your fans? Now is your chance...

If you climax reading my stories, please let me know as it's why I write them and I love hearing from women readers.

Q. Finally, do you have a website or a blog, where your fans can visit and maybe learn more about you?

Not yet.

Please read Darkhorse's stories!
