BELTHAZOR INTERVIEW

Of all the stories I've read here over the past few months, the one that has really stuck in my mind was Belthazor's "Fun With Fairies." Not because I am in any way inclined to on plastic pointy ears and run around Fantasy Conventions screaming "I am Tinkerbelle, hear me tink." But because, even in my childhood, the idea of being friends with a fairy struck me as a lot more interesting than hanging with the kids on my block. Especially if I could go to fairyland too.

Of course I had to speak with the creator of such a wonderful tale... and read through his other work as well, back to September 2012 when he first appeared with "An Interesting Ride Home" ("although I started writing my stories a bit before that. Publishing on a different site at first"). Since then, he's published thirteen stories - and there's more to come.

ES: Now, is there anything you'd like to tell us about yourself?

B: Well, I'm 23 and in college...

ES: Yum. Sorry. Continue...

B: And I'm studying to work with animals. I'm still figuring out my sexual...ness (100% hetero, just figuring out my likes/dislikes), so my stories will range a bit; I'm rather artistic (drawing, singing, writing, all that jazz) and I would love to act on stage (again) or on film someday. I believe in coexistence between people of all race, religion (or lack thereof), code and creed can be achieved through understanding of one another. I'm a bit of an optimistic hippie like that. I'm also a huge nerd and an encyclopedia of random (and sometimes useless) information. But hey, it makes crosswords fun! :P

ES: How and when did you begin writing erotic stories?

B: Actually, I never considered writing any erotica (because it's hard to make it all fictional as a virgin) until a friend of mine on another erotic stories site said I should give it a shot. So in that conversation, I told her two stories of mine that were true (foreplay-type stuff) and she loved the way I told the stories, so she insisted that I publish them, which I did. "An Interesting Ride Home" and "An Evening with Christina" are those stories and both are on here.

ES: Have you published anywhere other than ES.com?

B: I also publish on LushStories.com. It's a wonderful site that I love writing for and spending time on.

ES: What is it about writing erotica that you most enjoy?

B: I think the part I enjoy the most is the idea that my words, my thoughts... my creative mind in general, can engross readers the way some of my stories have and can even turn them on and bring them pleasure. To me, that's priceless.

ES: What is your favorite category to write in, and why?

B: Hmm.... My favorite category to write in is a tricky one. Possibly sex-at-work (as a broad "category"), but probably the "supernatural"/"fantasy/sci-fi" category, as I've always had a fascination with the mythical and occult.

ES: How much of yourself do you include in your stories?

B: I feel like I always put at least a bit of myself in all of my stories, but I've written myself into quite a few of them; sometimes because it's easier to write the stories as if they were happening to me, sometimes as a way to enhance my own fantasies.

ES: Is there anything that happens in your stories that you would really like to try in "real life", but haven't yet been able to?

B: Ooh, there are plenty of things in my stories I'd love to try out in real life. Several of which would be impossible (that being the supernatural stuff), but others are completely possible. A threesome is still an interesting idea that part of me would want to try, while at the same time I'm not really sure how it would really go. I am a bit of an exhibitionist and a bit of a voyeur, so the chance to try some more of that would definitely be appealing to me.

ES: Does your partner or any of your friends know that you write? What do they think?

B: My wonderful lady knows that I do and quite enjoys most of my stories. Some of my friends know, as well. Some of them have read my work and given me a lot of praise for them, whereas some of my other friends are more along the "Dude, I don't want to know what goes on in your head" route. lol

ES: What, if any, difficulties do you face when writing - erotic writing difficulties and general writing difficulties? And how do you overcome them?

B: A lot of times, I'll find myself falling into a rut of "done-to-death" plots and story ideas, which I hate doing. I want my stories to be as original and creative as possible. Therefore, I try to think outside the box as much as I possibly can. The other is, as I'm sure many authors can relate to, finding "the mood" and the inspiration to write. I haven't quite figured out how to make that happen at will (the "writing zen mood" I need to be in), but I'm working on it. I've found that often, a combination of relaxed, horny, tired and happy will usually do it for me. But alas, it's a very delicate balance to achieve and maintain for any extended amount of time.

ES: How about in more general terms - how do you feel about the "outside world"'s perception of erotic writing?

B: I feel like there is a lot of misconception between the world of erotica and "the rest of the world." It seems to me that most people dismiss erotica as "smut" or "porn" without giving it a second thought because they are stuck in conservative mindsets or because they simply don't understand. On the other hand, the big jump since the "50 Shades" series has brought the erotic literary world back out of the shadows and paperback "romance novels" with cowboys on them. I don't personally care for "50 Shades", but hey, to each his own and if it helps remove some of the stigma, I'm cool with it.

ES: One thing that I love about ES is that you very quickly build up a community of fans, who enjoy writing to and hearing from their favorite authors. Do you have any favorite topics that have surfaced in these "conversations"?

B: I agree that being able to chat with fans and writers I'm a fan of is awesome. I think some of the best conversations I've had were about the things we found funny in our readers. One writer here (the ever-talented "Bosom Buddies") was telling me about how one chapter of one of his stories was not greeted very well by people who had read and loved the other chapters, whereas I read it and loved it. I find stuff like that funny, the way that people's opinions can be so incredibly different while reading the exact same story.

ES: How do you feel when you receive negative comments or very low votes from readers?

B: If I receive a negative comment, of course I'm disappointed and a bit upset. If they are constructive criticism, however, I roll with it and try to step up my game. Low votes, however, with no explanation or anything is genuinely upsetting. If I'm going to vote a story low, I explain why. To me, that just seems like common courtesy.

ES: What kind of stories would you never write?

B: There are a few kinds of stories I will never write. Sex between family members, with animals, forced sex or the hardcore (dark/brutal) BDSM stuff. Just... no.

ES: And do you read, and respond to, other writers on the site? Who are your favorites?

B: I do indeed. As for my favorites... it's a long list, but I'll give it a go. "Bosom Buddies" is right near the top, along with "stevieraygovan", "The Bear", "LadyGrey", and one other here whose name escapes me. Those are my favorite authors here on ES.

ES: Do you remember the first pornography you ever saw?

B: I do, actually! When I was younger, I was very curious about things of a sexual nature, but wouldn't really admit it to myself, so in perusing the internet one day (and looking at sexy women - often dressed as superheroes or whatever - not porn), I stumbled across a site with several extremely graphic photos. One had a girl topless and another was a shot with the guy right behind the girl (spooning) and the photo was a close-ish-up shot of his cock inside of her. It stuck in my mind ever since.

ES: What's the kinkiest thing you have ever done?

B: Hmm.... The kinkiest thing I've ever done could be fingering a girl in the backseat on the way home with both of her parents in the front seats, driving the car and talking to each other. AKA, the plot of "An Interesting Ride Home". But I think strapping my lady down to the bed and having my way with her would take the cake. lol Haven't written about that one and honestly, I don't think I will. Some stories are best kept between lovers.

ES: Do you have any fantasies that you would like to fulfill?

B: I have a lot of fantasies I would love to fulfill. But to keep things manageable, I'll stick to the sexual ones. ;P I would go crazy being able to make love outside somewhere. Somewhere secluded, but with the slight possibility that someone could stumble upon us. Or the chance to watch other people fool around and be able to spy on them.

ES: What is a major turn on for you during sex?

B: Probably one of my biggest turn-ons during sex is when my lady talks dirty to me. She almost never does it (never knows what to say) or when she talks about how big I am, how hard I am or how good it feels. Call it a bit egocentric, but it helps.

ES: How about a major turn off?

B: A major turn-off during sex hasn't quite happened yet, but I know some things that would do it. Stupidity, for instance. Not true unintelligence; the kind I refer to is ignorance. If the girl is dumber than a sack of rocks because she can't be bothered to educate herself, it's not happening. Another is people who are just mean for no reason. Simple, but a major cock softener.

ES: How do you feel about same sex relationships, both personally and as a writer?

B: Personally, I feel that same-sex relationships are no different than any others. Love is a universal force that isn't restricted to gender or what-goes-where. As far as my writing goes, I've written several lesbian stories (upon request from a girl on another site) and while they're not my best work (how much do I really know about what sex is like for a lesbian?), I'm proud of them. I've not written any man-on-man stories, because A) I know nothing about it; and B) I think I would be a bit out of my comfort zone (possibly because I have family members who fall into that category and it would feel weird thinking "I wonder if it's like..."). So... yeah, probably not writing any gay male stories. Sorry, all!

ES: Do you explore these feelings, positive and negative in your stories?

B: I like to explore a lot of emotion in my stories. A simple wham, bam, thank you, ma'am doesn't make a good story to me. I need my characters fleshed out. I want to imagine their emotions; work through them for the story's sake so that it comes out as a better creation at the end.

ES: How long does it take for you to write a story? Could you talk us through the process?

B: It takes me a while to write a story now. When I was first getting started, it took maybe a week at a time for each one. Now, it takes ages just to finish one. Probably because I'll be halfway through one and get an idea for another. As for talking you through my process... if I could lay out my process that easily, I would have a lot more stories published. There was a question similar to this earlier on that should have a better explanation.

ES: What do you think is the best story you have published here?

B: The best story I have published here is probably... hrm.... I'm gonna' say probably "Fun With Fairies."

ES: Told you so!

B: It's definitely been the best received and the most praised, so... probably that one.

ES: Is there anything else you would like to say to the readers of this interview and your fans? Now is your chance...

B: I would definitely say that if you're new to ES, take a careful look. This site may seem unassuming from a glance, but it's awesome! ES was the first place I ever read erotica and where I discovered my love of the craft. Other than that... may the Force be with you! Nah, but I would definitely like to say "thank you" to anyone who took the time to read this (or any of my work), so... thank you! :D

ES: Finally, do you have a website or a blog, where your fans can visit and maybe learn more about you?

B: I'm not really a blogger, but I do have an account on lushstories.com under my same name, "Belthazor." So if anyone is interested in seeking me out, chatting with me or learning a bit more about me, come find me there!

Please read Belthazor's stories.
