DON ABDUL INTERVIEW

Don Abdul published his first story here in October 2008. Since then, he has published around forty tales, scattered across a variety of categories, but with a definite emphasis on breaking taboos - adultery seems to be one of his favorite themes. Tell us more about that, please!

Well, my writing is focused on pushing the society's rules on sexual and moral propriety and decorum to the limits. I have a fascination with the ability of certain prim and proper people to lead double lives, presenting a public persona for all to see and look up to, but secretly live their lives for themselves for the sake of their happiness. That is why I love my characters to be deviants of sorts who come to the point in their lives whereby they give up all pretences and live their lives openly and enjoy undiluted happiness regardless of the opinion of others.

Q: Okay, who is Don Abdul? Tell us a few things about you - name, age and so on.

I'm a Nigerian and due to the plethora of taboos especially sexual taboos in African society, I decided from the get go to adopt a pen name that both maintained and protected my true identity. I'm a 40 year old father of two young boys, and I work in the private sector at a job my friends think is rather too serious for a writer of erotica (that's a laugh).

Q: How and when did you begin writing erotic stories?

I started writing poetry about 27 years ago back in high school but I branched out into erotic poetry in college. On the internet I started posting my erotic poetry back in 2004. I wrote my first ever erotic story titled Naughty Professor in 2005, and despite my anxiety about readers' reaction it turned out to be quite well received. It was a heartfelt story based on my real life experience back in college.

Most of my stories are at least partly based on a true story, or have certain elements from real life experiences of friends or family in them. The rest is just a figment of my hyperactive imagination.

Q: Have you published anywhere other than ES.com?

Well I have published my stories on a variety of sites, including Yahoo.com where I started out, Multiply.com, Literotica.com, Lush.com, Poetrycraze.com, Lustylibrary.com and a few others. Of all these sites, ES.com is one of my very favorites.

Q: I'm sure readers have their own vision of who you are - how much of yourself do you include in your stories?

I'm an easy going, naughty open minded guy with a great sense of humor. There is always a little bit of me in every story I write. A little something of me forms part of my character's profile.

Q: What is it about writing erotica that you most enjoy?

The freedom to beak taboos, push the envelope and experiment.

Q: Do you write from experience or fantasy? Or maybe a combination of the two?

Most of my stories are at least partly based on a true story, or have certain elements from real life experiences of friends or family in them. The rest is just a figment of my hyperactive imagination. So you could say they are a combination of experience and fantasy.

Q: Is there anything you have written into a story that you would really like to try in "real life", but haven't yet been able to?

Yes, the one that readily comes to mind is double penetration of a sexy, naughty cougar in a MFM threesome situation.

Q: Does your partner or any of your friends know that you write? What do they think?

Yes my friends know.

Q: How about in more general terms - how do you feel about the "outside world"'s perception of erotic writing?

It is unfortunately what it is. It's like masturbation though, everybody reads it but most would deny it anyway. (just my opinion).

Q: Tell us about the photograph you have posted in your ES profile.

Interesting, it was a photo taken one night in my office by an ex. I was working late and she stopped by to help me tidy up. LOL

Q: One thing that I love about ES is that you very quickly build up a community of fans, who enjoy writing to and hearing from their favorite authors. Do you have any favorite topics that have surfaced in these "conversations"?

It all revolves around eating your cake and still having it, how? Most folks are fascinated with the idea of sharing, or at least wishing they could.

Q: How do you feel when you receive negative comments or very low votes from readers?

I feel both okay and Sorry. I feel ok if the poor comment or low vote has been entered by someone who has read and genuinely think the story could have been written better or proof read better before posting, or didn't like the particular subject matter. However I feel sorry for those few misguided readers whose only motive for rating a story low or leaving a nasty comment is the fact that they think it's a strategic way of demoralizing the competition (me). As a writer I respect my readers opinion and freedom of expression, but in life it never hurts to be considerate in dealing with others, and that includes giving feedback to stories published by author.

Having said all that I must point out that such issues are at a very minimum here at ES.com compared to other sites that I know of. The members here are quite civil, considerate and very community minded.

Q: And do you read, and respond to, other writers on the site? Who are your favorites?

Actually, I have quite a long list of favorite authors on this site.

Q: Have you ever been filmed or photographed having sex?

Yes I have. It was a light bondage session with my exhibitionist ex, and her friend who tagged along but only watched snapped the pictures. However for the protection of the innocent, the shots were deleted before we left the room.

Q: Do you remember the first pornography you ever saw?

Yep! It was a vintage Swedish flick with a chubby blonde, a slim blond and a shaggy haired guy. I thought it was awesome, but hey, what did I know back then uh? lol

Q: Do you have any fantasies that you would like to fulfill?

Been around done a lot and have a trunk full of T-Shirts. LOL

Q: What is a major turn on for you during sex?

Having a woman suck on my man nipples; it drives me absolutely crazy!

Q: How about a major turn off?

Frigidity

Q: How do you feel about same sex relationships, both personally and as a writer?

We may all bat for different teams, the fact remains that we all love the game very much. lol

Q: Do you explore these feelings, positive and negative in your stories?

I try not to dwell on it, but it can be quite difficult to avoid all together.

Q: How long does it take for you to write a story? Could you talk us through the process?

It depends on how my muse is rubbing me at the time, my state of mind and so on. The fact is I've knocked of some great stories within a couple of hour, and other over a period of months. One common trait however is that I write a first draft and read it over and do a few rewrites, which I then proof read and spell check. There are also those stories that I finish but don't feel like publishing, I leave those in my writers vat to ferment over time. The truth is each story comes to me differently. I usually have at least half a dozen stories in development at any given time.

Q: Right now, your most popular story is Forbidden Fruit, with an average vote of 9.31. Do you agree that this is your best? Why do you think it struck such a chord?

This is news to me, and I have no idea why it strikes such a chord, apart from the fact that it breaks taboos.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to say to the readers of this interview and your fans? Now is your chance...

I would to say thanks to all reader here and elsewhere because without readers and the feedback they give us, writers wouldn't exist as a breed. And to my fans here at ES.com, I remain grateful for your encouragement and support expressed in your comments, vote and numerous emails. I am honored to be in the midst of such intelligent, articulate and generous people. Thank you very much and watch out for even more stories from me.
