STARDOG CHAMPION INTERVIEW

Stardog Champion has been publishing with ES for over a decade - he submitted his first story in 1999, "a quickie involving Dolly Parton getting gangbanged by a college fraternity. Early on I did a bunch of famous people scenarios but gradually branched out into a lot of other different genres." His most recent submission was a series entitled Nancy's Inferno. He describes it as "a nine part series sort of based in jest on Dante's rings of Hell. The first 8 parts of the series are posted here at ES and the 9th is available upon request due to long standing content restrictions here."

So, who is Stardog Champion?

I don't really have anything all that interesting to say about myself. Self-promotion has never been my gift. Just a small town guy trying to make ends meet, and probably a shade more cynical about the world than I need to be.

Q. How and when did you begin writing erotic stories?

My first brushes with writing erotica came when I was probably around 14. Some of the guys from the neighborhood would have sleepovers and at some point we would invariably start talking about women who lived on the street, girls we went to school with, teachers, etc... and at some point we started passing around a notebook with what amounted to chain stories about some of those women where each of us would add a paragraph or two to further the plot before passing the notebook on. I started noticing the other guys writing less when I was writing more and each of them would quickly scan what I wrote. Even at that age, I could sense their approval and when they would retire off and lock themselves in the bathroom on occasion, I kind of sensed I had a gift, such as it was.

Q. Have you published anywhere other than ES.com?

ES is definitely my home base, but I do post most everything else I do over at Literotica.com, including the stuff that's too racy for here.

Q. What is it about writing erotica that you most enjoy?

Plain and simple, the greatest joy of this hobby is knowing people out there are getting off on something I created. That at any given moment any one of the 6 Billion folks on Earth may be reading something I wrote and having it effect and arouse them. It's a very empowering feeling!

Q. What is your favorite category to write in, and why?

My favorites categories are easily older/younger and interracial, mainly because I love writing about contrast. Race, age, social class, violated positions of power, all create quite a fertile ground for creating psychological angst, and if I do have one strength as a writer, I'd like to think its exploring situations where people who normally would never become involved sexually somehow find themselves thrown together. I don't put a lot of "Barbie and Ken" types either. Basically, I try to create characters who're ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances.

Q. How much of yourself do you include in your stories?

Honestly, I interject very little of myself into the stories. Most of them are told in third person. I don't have the knack for writing autobiographically. It just sounds trite transferring it from my head down to the piece of paper. When I create characters out of thin air, they tend to write the story for me and it creates much more excitement and mystery for me than knowing exactly how a storyline is going to come out.

Q. Is there anything that happens in your stories that you would really like to try in "real life", but haven't yet been able to?

There are a lot of scenarios in my stories that do fascinate me, but if any of them happened to me in real life, I'd probably blush and run for the hills.

Q. Does your partner or any of your friends know that you write? What do they think?

I've had a couple of girlfriends over the years that eventually found out I wrote this stuff and took some peeks. There have been others that I knew just couldn't handle the content and frankly I didn't want to take the chance of them seeing me through the prism of a smut writer, or that they may be vindictive enough to tell a bunch of people about it if/when our relationship hit the skids.

Q. What, if any, difficulties do you face when writing - erotic writing difficulties and general writing difficulties? And how do you overcome them?

Thankfully I haven't had too many issues with writer's block. Luckily this is just a hobby for me so I don't put an iota of pressure on myself to do it. I'd hate to think if I had to write with a deadline hanging over my head. If I do get to a difficult spot, generally I either just lay it down and leave it be until something of value pops into my head, or I keep writing gibberish until something that makes sense grows out of that.

Q. How about in more general terms - how do you feel about the "outside world"'s perception of erotic writing?

I don't have a good handle on the outside world's perception of erotic literature.. it's not the easiest topic to broach in polite conversation, but I will say this.... Between this site and Lit, I've had over 10 million reads of my stories over the past decade.. that's a million on average a year, so there's an appetite for it out there somewhere.

Q. One thing that I love about ES is that you very quickly build up a community of fans, who enjoy writing to and hearing from their favorite authors. Do you have any favorite topics that have surfaced in these "conversations"?

I've had tons of great interactions with readers. It's quite a privilege when someone allows you to come into such an intimate part of their life. It's especially neat when I hear from couples that jointly appreciate something I came up with!!

Q. How do you feel when you receive negative comments or very low votes from readers?

I started dealing with the low vote/ angry email thing almost from day 1. Writing stuff in the interracial category, sad to say in this day and age, sort of brings out an element that still hides in the shadows. When it comes to low scores, generally I found that usually comes from other authors who feel the need to vote down 'competing stories' to make theirs look better. There doesn't seem to be as much of that nowadays, but there was a time here long ago that it was rampant. The other low votes usually come from people I've pissed off due to content issues over the years and frankly I take that as the ultimate compliment. If I can affect someone's emotions that much with something I created (even negatively) that that's quite an accomplishment.

Q. And do you read, and respond to, other writers on the site? Who are your favorites?

Sadly, I don't read nearly as much Internet porn as I use to. That said, there are so many talented and imaginative writers here, I'd hate to name a few and leave someone out.

Q. Do you remember the first pornography you ever saw?

The first pornography that I ever saw... that's an interesting story. Even though I'd caught the occasional peek at a Playboy or Penthouse as a small child, my first real indoctrination for hardcore porn came when I was about 10 or so. I had a slightly older friend who lived down the street and one afternoon we were over at his house and he asked if I wanted to see something in his parent's bedroom. Forget Playboy, his folks had an entire bedroom chest full of adult magazines, movies and toys. It was my first real understanding of how many different ways to have sex there were from the pictures, but it also planted the seed at a young age that women could enjoy the kinkier side of things from all the stuff this guy's Mom had on her side of the bedroom drawers.

Q. What's the kinkiest thing you have ever done?

One person's wild is another person's mild, but let's see....Kinkiest thing I ever done. Would probably have to be a few years back in my mid 20's when I basically helped a few couple I met online live out some of their voyeuristic fantasies. Essentially, husbands wanting to see their wife get nailed by another guy while they sat back and watched. It was pretty heady stuff for a young kid, but it certainly made me perpetually question what goes on behind closed doors... a question thats at the heart now of a lot of the stories I do...

Q. Do you have any fantasies that you would like to fulfill?

I don't think we really have enough time to list all the fantasies I still would like to check off my sexual bucket list. I've never taken a girl's virginity... always thought that would be a neat bragging point, on the other hand, now that I'm 38, any chances of doing that without the likelihood of going to jail is miniscule:)

Q. What is a major turn on for you during sex?

Turn ones during sex... my main one is a woman who's liberated enough to know what she wants and who's not afraid to ask for it. One who's not afraid to take control of her sexuality. Also love a girl who's vocal...the subtle (and not so subtle) sounds a girl makes while she's building up to an orgasm is amazing and the look on a woman's face when she cums is something that gets etched in my mind forever. Selfishly, I'm also a fan of black stockings and high heels with big, teased hair..( proof I'm a child of the 80's I guess)

Q. How about a major turn off?

Women that are self-centered are an increasing turn off for me...as I age, I also seem to need an intellectual connection as much as a physical one with the girls I'm sleeping with. Damn, I am getting old LOL

Q. How do you feel about same sex relationships, both personally and as a writer?

I have absolutely no problems with same sex relationships. Love is so hard to find in the world, you take it where/ when you can find it. Whenever I see a gay or an interracial couple that has been together for awhile, I've always appreciated how deep their love for each other must run considering all the crap they inevitably have to endure just to openly be together.

Q. Do you explore these feelings, positive and negative in your stories?

I've sprinkled in some same sex scenes in my stories... just like any self respecting guy... there's nothing wrong with the occassional girl on girl on girl on girl scene, and as far as guy on guy stuff, there's a couple of stories over the years where I worked in a male sex scenerio...The end of Running to Stand Still stand out....

Q. How long does it take for you to write a story? Could you talk us through the process?

The writing process for me isn't all that taxing....I have a idea notebook with a couple hundred story brainstorms, a few snippets of potential scenes and characters, or just something that struck me as off that could be incorporated into a plotline at some point. I'm more of a grinder by nature. I don't have huge bursts of creativity, instead I mainly write a couple hundred words a day as the muse warrants then move on to other stuff. The back-story is usually a piece of cake and the fucks scenes often write themselves as well. The trickiest part for me is always that moment when the story goes 'sexual'. Trying to create a proper build-up that isn't rushed, and having the reader 'buy' the legitimacy of the outcome is something I do often fret over.

Q. What do you think is the best story you have published here?

I've written so many types of stories over the years, let me rack my brain a little. From a purely sexually decadent standpoint, "Feeding Them to the Lions" worked on a lot of levels along with "Crossed Wires... Crossed Boundaries".

From a romantic, tenderness standpoint, I did enjoy the way "Midnight Train Going Anywhere" turned out ..not to mention I'm a huge Journey fan so the chance to sneak that lyric into a title was fun.

My favorite all around story though is probably "Pocket Full of Innocence". The depth of the characters, the dilemma they find themselves in, the sexual tension and most of all, the twist at the end... its the first story as soon as I finished it, I actually felt like saying "Thats pretty darn good if I do say so myself."

Q. Is there anything else you would like to say to the readers of this interview and your fans? Now is your chance...

Oh, I guess all I can say is I hope this next decade brings as much joy and discovery as the previous one has...

Q. Finally, do you have a website or a blog, where your fans can visit and maybe learn more about you?

Other than my page here at ES and my other one at Lit... my digital footprint is pretty small. Despite the fact that there's not a lot of breadth to the footprint, hopefully enough people out there feel like there's some significant depth to it after all these years.
