It was a Thursday evening at the beginning of October and the weather was typical for the time of year, rain, rain, and more rain. Richard was walking from his job in the city to catch the local tube which would take him home. On his way, he paused at the local newspaper stand and bought a copy of the evening paper. He scanned the headlines, there was nothing much in them except for gloom, gloom and more gloom. The next section wasn't much more interesting, as he couldn't afford to buy a new house, so it seemed pointless looking through them. He then moved on to the section containing all of the local vacancies in it for part time employment. As Christmas was approaching, he could really do with some extra cash to pay for the presents he usually brought his nephews and nieces. If he didn't start shopping soon, most of the shops would be sold out of all the really popular toys, and he would be stuck with what to buy the kids.

With this thought in mind, he soon reached the tube station. It wasn't long before a train came in, so he boarded quickly and found himself a seat. As his scheduled stop was over ten minutes away, he started to read through the small ads.

"Storesman required - 6 till 10pm, Monday to Friday. Apply in writing to..."

"Part-Time Secretary - would suit school leaver..."
