I could see the moment my boss put her head round the door that I wasn't going to like what she was going to say. There was something about the way Julia was smiling and the set of her head that had Bad News written all over it. What really did it for me, though, before she even opened her mouth, was the way her eyes were fixed resolutely on mine, always a surefire sign that she wanted something; she never bothered to make eye contact otherwise.

"Could you do me a favour?" she asked. That was one thing I did like about her; she never beat about the bush.

"What kind of favour?" I asked, trying to put as much frost as I could into my voice without actually being rude. Putting people off this way was a skill I'd put a lot of time and practice into developing, but Julia seemed immune to it.

"Well, there's a client flying in from Italy this evening..."

"No, no, it's not that bad. Just lighten up, Claire. All I want you to do is go to the hotel, make sure she's arrived all right, take her out to dinner, make her feel welcome, keep her company, that sort of thing." ...
