Natsumi Morikawa was one of the most dominant volleyball players in Japanese high school history. Standing at a willowy 6'3" and towering over her much more diminutive teammates, Natsumi seemed to be born to play the sport. Her father, Takashi, was an ex-olympic volleyballer who was now a high school teacher, though not at the school that Natsumi went to. Her mother, Eiko, was a former Japanese industrial league basketball player who retired once she met and married Takashi. So that Natsumi seemed to inherit her father's instinctive and intense approach to the sport as well as her mother's leaping ability and court sense is really not much of a surprise.

With Natsumi cannonading spike after spike against much less athletically gifted opponents in her school's league, she easily powered, more like overpowered, her club to the league title. On the court, she was aggressive and wanted the ball. After the end of the game, though, she was almost a mirror opposite. Due to her stature in a country where a woman who is 165cm (approximately 5'4") is considered to be taller than average, Natsumi was very self conscious. In spite of being well liked by her classmates since she was not only beautiful, but quiet and accomodating, Natsumi felt like a freak.
