Spring Skiing

Chapter 1: Introduction

We had had a lot of snow that winter. The most in more than 50 years, the weather service said. Most of the neighbors just complained, saying they were spending all their time shoveling. I had to admit that even I had had enough shoveling. However, my wife, Judy, and I are avid cross country skiers, and with so much snow that year, it was the best year in recent memory for skiing. The season had started early, and in April, there was still enough snow to ski. In fact, an early April storm in the northern part of the state meant the possibility of skiing until almost the end of April.

We had skied hundreds of miles already that winter, making the most of the excellent ski conditions, but the season was drawing to a close. The sun was getting higher, and, while we knew it was cooler up north than in the city, we knew from the patches of grass starting to show in the city that the ski season would soon be over. And who knows when the skiing would be that good again.

So, we decided to take an impromptu vacation the second week of April, make reservations at a small inn upstate, and try to get in a few days of spring skiing before the snow disappeared.
