Five after ten. The evening was about over. The lone waitress in a dirty forgotten diner busied herself with preparations for closing. Fatigue was setting in and she found herself stopping to let her thoughts wander now that the rush of the dinner hour was past.

The clock hanging on the stark dingy wall seemed suddenly incongruous to Hillary. She had glanced at the old relic many times, but never really stopped to look at it. Somehow tonight it appeared different. Its gaudy red, white and blue colors contrasted with the plainness of the face as it jerkily ground onward with its never-ending task. Surveying the austere confines of the old diner, the smelly arm pit that was her personal dungeon four nights out of every week, Hillary found her eyes drawn back to that clock.

She stared at the hands and numerals intently, as if for the first time. One never saw clocks like this anymore. Everything was supposed to be easy and friendly, or at least made to look like it. Yet fittingly, the time piece seemed completely at home in this greasy dump; nothing was easy at present, either here at work, or in her messed-up life. ...
