I had dreaded these holiday gatherings since puberty, mostly because I was the only kid in the family and had no one to relate to. Most of my relatives were older, with older kids of their own. My parents – the annual hosts -- were older, too, but they decided to have me later in life.

So there I would sit, staring at the football game, munching away on chips while the middle-agers tried to talk “cool” with me. Year after year, it was the same old shit.

But this year things went a little differently. I’m 19 now, in my first semester of college. I feel maybe I can carry the conversation a little more with the mature folks. I might be able to fit in better. And I have my own car, so I can sneak away if I really needed to.

It was the usual parade of family through the front door. All with their own quirkiness and personalities. So predictable.
