My Friend, My Buddy, My ???

I had known my best friend, Dave, and his family since we were in first grade together. I'd watched his little sister, Dawn, grow up. Now a soon-to-be high school senior, she hung with us garbed in her usual jeans and sweatshirt, being a total tomboy and joining in on a lot of our 'male' activities. Dawn was a year older than most kids in her class, due to a lost year of school because of a severe illness as a child, but she was still like a baby sister to me. I thought...

Over the last few months I had noticed Dawn becoming quieter and less inclined to 'rough house' with her brother and I. She seemed to be losing interest in the tackle football games, too. When we asked her about it, she'd just reply, "I'm not in the mood right now," which surprised us both, because Dawn had an eternally sunny disposition, was rarely moody, and had always been up for whatever we wanted to do. Dave and I just chalked it up to a 'girl thing' and pretty much forgot about it.

One autumn Saturday afternoon a couple weeks before school started I was at Dave's waiting for him to get ready for a double date we had planned. I was sitting in the kitchen having coffee with Dave's Mom when the front door banged open and we could here Dawn shouting, "Mom, I made it, I made it! I even got my uniform!"
