The automatic doors swished open and a blast of cool air encircled Brian as he walked into the bright corridor. The hospital was relatively empty at this time of night - just how he liked it. As Brian passed the Emergency Dept. he waved to the triage nurse and saw a brief glimpse of the mayhem ensuing within. The various beeps of the telemetry machines barely audible over his footsteps on the linoleum.

Brian caught the lift up to the 9th floor and entered the Registrar's room where he sorted out his correspondence and looked despondently at the pile of charts on his desk waiting to be updated and signed off. Slinging his stethoscope off his neck and letting out a preparatory sigh, Brian walked into the ward, splashing some Hexol solution on his hands.

At 10pm the ward was fairly quiet, the two nurses on duty looked up as he entered and called a subdued yet cheery greeting. Brian grinned, said hello then walked into the back office where Arthur, the day Reg was packing up his things.

'Hey Art' Brian smiled, he knew Arthur hated being called that, yet he couldn't resist the overly familiar greeting. 'Hell, it's going to be a long night, might as well start it on a high note' he thought.
