A Surprise Visit

It had been a long weekend. Three days in Chicago for fun and then an additional two hours drive home from the airport in heavy traffic and I was ready to relax in front of the television. Maybe the television would watch me for a change. I was ready to relax with my water, phone and ashtray in front of me on the coffee table. I had eaten on the way home, so I was ready to nap.

Of course, when you get all ready to relax something happens, this time, the doorbell was ringing. I was ready to just let it go, but it rang again. I made the old man sounds as I got up off the couch. Granted, I am not old. Thirty-eight is not old, but after the weekend I had, I felt as if I was seventy. The front door was shut because of the air-conditioning, so I looked through the peep hole. My demeanor rapidly changed when I saw it was Maggie.

Maggie and I did some community service work together. Cleaning up empty lots in the city, working at the soup kitchen and last weekend she was at the Humane Society with me working their fund raiser. I knew very little about her. She had just graduated from high school and was heading off to the Army in the fall. I had also seen her with a boyfriend out and about around town. She always had a smile on her rather plain face.
