Part I: Friends

The muted thump-thump sound of the orange basketball as it bounced against the driveway made little echoes ring across the afternoon air, reverberating quietly against the pretty suburban houses surrounded by lovely green hills. The atmosphere was heavy with the sounds of titanic, athletic struggle, the panting of young bodies locked in fierce competition darting all over the little Orange County carport. Feigning a movement to her left, Amy nimbly spun to her right with dizzying speed, passing her dumbfounded opponent and scoring an easy lay-up. The ball rattled a bit on the metal rim before it sank triumphantly into the net and onto the concrete below.

"Two for me, none for you!" Amy said playfully, smiling impishly as she flicked a braid of lovely auburn hair away from her face. She assumed a defensive position not unlike the great Bob Cousy as she awaited her opponent's next move, her teenage body swaying hypnotically as her hips rolled with the rhythm of her long, svelte arms.

"That means you're behind only thirty six points now instead of thirty eight" Tommy laughed, admiring the girl's enthusiasm and optimistic ...
