It had been a perfect night. Not perfect by romantic standards, but perfect in that something magical had happened. When they bumped into each other at the bookstore it was like a random act of God. Chris and Lisa hadn't spoken to each other in over two years, the result of a fight they had over some trivial thing. Chris was one to hold grudges and Lisa was as stubborn as he was, so the matter went unresolved for a long time. The glancing glimpses of each other at backyard barbecues of friends elicited polite greetings, but nothing more.

It was a shame though. The two had been close friends, with similarities in interests, laughing and talking about absolutely nothing important for hours and being completely enraptured. Perhaps the innocent flirting that passed between them held a more deep seated affection, but neither had acted on it and Lisa dated other men, while Chirs moved on on his own. Two years of silence broke that day as Lisa rounded the corner and literally ran into to Chris.

"Oh, God, I'm sorry," she apologized without seeing who it was, fumbling with her stack of books.
