Chapter 3 The Burning Question

The guys were--as expected--up and gone before daybreak. I stayed in bed until six-thirty, then got up, showered, and went down to the coffee shoppe for some much-needed caffeine. Darcy was already there. "You always sleep this late?" she jabbed playfully.

"Caffeine first," I growled back. "Then we can fence."

My life-saving coffee arrived along with Vera, and Darcy asked her, "You as grumpy as sour puss here before you get some coffee?"

Vera smiled. "Not quite as much."

Barb stumbled in as Vera's coffee was being set on the table. "So," she asked, swiping Vera's cup, "how much did you lose before following Ron upstairs?"

"Only one bucket," Vera answered mater-of-factly.
