"The Final Act" by Sarah Miles

Krystina stared at the array of open books scattered over the wooden conference table. Her mind ached from studying. She was tired of trying to memorize useless facts and so dreadfully tired of school in general. Who cared about macroeconomics anyway? After graduation she would spend her days behind a microscope, which had nothing to do with analyzing the national spending habits of third-world countries.

In the long run she knew the hard work of university would pay off, but today she just wanted to shut the books and have it all be over. With a deep breath, she massaged her temples with her fingertips, trying desperately to focus and make sense of the words on the page.

Suddenly the solitude of the library corner was broken by a deep, masculine whisper.

"Krystina . . .."

She turned in the direction of the voice but nobody was there. Actually, nobody was supposed to be there. That was precisely why she had chosen this secluded corner of the library; to give her the peace and quiet she needed to get ready for finals.
