Peeping Teen?

It wasn't as if I was planning on looking, but the opportunity presented itself and I took advantage of it. It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

The war in Europe was still raging, that summer of '44, and gas rationing was being strictly enforced throughout the States. Unless you or your parents worked in a defense factory, or knew someone in the right department, you didn't have a lot of gasoline to joy ride around town. Being just eighteen at the time, and soon to be a senior in high school, I didn't fall into either category.

My folks owned two cars, which was not too common back in those days, and dad had a job that qualified him for not only a "A" ration card, but a "C" as well. Somehow, mom was issued both an "A" and a "B". All of which meant that I could use moms car a couple days, or nights a week, but only if I had the money for gas. In those days, the price of gas was a whopping seventeen or eighteen cents a gallon.

I was lucky in having a part time job at the Brookside Theater. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, I worked the concession stand, Saturday nights, I ushered. This arrangement was nice in that I could ask a girl for a date, take her to the movie and not have to pay for her admission, popcorn or drinks. ...
