I'm still not used to coming home alone. The empty house is the worst part, ringing with both silence and the restless noises empty houses make.

I unlocked my front door at the end of hot sticky day in April, eight months after my teenage daughter Nina died. I'd made myself stickier by stopping off at the health club after work and running on the treadmill.
