Chapter 13: Out on the Town

Ethan sat at his computer and drummed his fingers on the desk edge. This data search was taking just too damn long. Some kind of result should have shown up by now. Ethan's fingers paused mid-tap. Maybe it was time to make another foray into the Matrix-like world. In his own mind he was already referring to it as the Virtual Realm.

The idea chilled him at the same time it caused his pulse to race. Who knew what could happen if he wasn't careful. He hated the thought of getting stuck in that streaming light and strobe of electrical shockwaves. He was only partly sure that he could exit at will. It was too much of an unknown, but his patience was far from infinite. Too much time was passing and that prophecy lingered in his mind. They had to find the third immortal soon. Ethan could feel the hairs at the back of his neck rising at the thought of not finding whoever it was.

Being the logical person that he was, Ethan delayed going back into that enticing world. He wanted to think it all through before committing himself to exploring that alluring plane of non-existence. After calming himself, Ethan began to sort it all out from his memories of his earlier brush with it. He let his eyes shut and replayed the entire scenario over and over within his mind's eye.
