"Hold your arm up while I get a band-aid," Stan told me. Within seconds, he'd efficiently slapped a bandage over the cotton ball on the inside of my arm.

"What kind of blood work?" I pulled my feet from the stirrups and scootched up on the exam table.

"Just the usual, making sure you're totally healthy. That's the only thing standing between you and status as one of our research subjects." Stan sat down on the wheeled stool and fiddled with the monitor on the cart at the foot of exam table.

Doc's departing words about making more money than God rang in my mind. Somehow I was going to cash in on it, too. If I was going to be their perfect test subject for whatever it was they were up to, then by damned, I was going to profit from it, too.

"Come back down here." He patted the end of the table. In his hand, he clutched a silvery tube that had clear plastic wrapped over it. It was connected by a cable to the equipment on the cart.

"What is that?" I asked warily. Still, I could put up with an awful lot for the kind of bucks they'd been discussing. I slid back down the table despite my misgivings.
