Ruth and Adam tried to act normally the next day. They didn't want Ann to know what had happened between them the previous evening.

After dinner, Adam told them more about the war. He spoke of the horrible things he had seen. Men being shot. The wounded crying out in pain. Blood all over. Amputations. Death.

He started to cry remembering it all. Ruth held him as he sobbed. She tried to console him the best she could. She asked Ann to get the bottle of whiskey her father kept in the cabinet.

After taking a good, long swallow of the whiskey, Adam regained his composure. Ruth and Ann both understood why Adam had broken down. He had witnessed many things that few people have. They sat in silence, not knowing what to say.

Adam finally rose and said he was going to bed. He left and went out to the barn. Ruth and Ann got ready for bed also. Soon they were all in bed.
