The Girl Next Door

It was one of those summers in Red Island when the heat seemed like it would never end. After another long and hot day, I took a cold shower at ten and tried to go to bed, but the shower didn’t help cool me off any and I couldn’t sleep. My bedroom was in the attic of my family’s summerhouse on the east shore of Red Island, so a strong breeze from the Atlantic Ocean usually present. The windows on either side of the room were open with two large fans blowing. One blew the cooler air in from outside; the other sucked the hot air out from inside. Despite this, my room was still over one hundred degrees by midnight.

I tossed and turned for hours, unsure of whether my sheets were actually cooler than the night air or if they made things hotter. In a vain attempt to cool off, I pulled off my t-shirt around eleven, then my boxers half an hour later. Somehow, it seemed that being naked only made the room hotter. Finally, around one in the morning, while lying spread-eagle across my queen sized bed, I was able to get to sleep.
