Initially David befriended John as a protest against the racist prejudice he had seen him encountering almost daily as they worked together. They both recognised that his efforts to get to know John had been taken partly out of sympathy and partly as a way of showing his opposition to racism but, rather to the surprise of both of them, he and the black man had quickly become firm friends.

David had told Audrey a great deal about John and she had been looking forward to meeting him for a long time. David had warned her that he had a reputation as a ladies' man but such was the strength of their love for one another and the depth of the friendship between the two men that neither was deterred from welcoming him into their home and fostering his friendship.
