I had been staying in Japan on vacation for about two weeks now. Life in Tokyo is fast paced, so I decided to take a drive about a hour out of the city and see a little of the suburbs. The enormous skyscrapers soon gave way to smaller buildings, public parks, and less congestion on the roads. Perhaps it was this more relaxed state of mind that caused me to pay less attention to the road and more to the scenery around me because before I knew it I was swerving my car out of the way to avoid striking another car at an intersection that I had completely not seen. Fortunately, we ended up barely tapping each other. When we got out to check the state of what had happened, I got a look at who I had hit. She was a short woman with short black hair, graying a bit on top, large square glasses, and a harried look on her face. We looked at each other and she saw that I was not Japanese. Pausing a bit before speaking, she used her best broken English to say, "My name is Ai."

Taken aback by a sudden introduction, I followed suit and said, "My name is Tom."
