(The story so far: Jim and Jane, after a high school love affair, separated for a couple years, Jim staying in Minnesota and Jane continuing dance and going to college in NYC. During that time, Jim fell in love with Vic, Jane's mother. Jane, who had discovered her own beauty while they were a high school couple, had returned to her self-conscious awkwardness while leading a destructive life in NYC. Jane's mother sent Jim to NYC. In NYC Jim accidentally on purpose bumped into Jane. They had sex during which Jim saved her from her abusive ex-boyfriend. He was about to explain to Jane why he had come to NYC, but first a narrative on Jim and Jane's mother's relationship:)

Where it really began was those visit by Jim to Jane's mother's house. Mrs. Riemer became Victoria who became, when they became intimate, just Vic. Jim loved saying Vic.

Strangely, when he continued to call Jane's house once a week to chat with her mother, as he had done since before Jane and he had even dated, it was less about missing Jane as it was about enjoying this older woman's company. After a couple months, with Jane well ensconced ...
