I stood in the doorway, watching her as she paid her share of the bills. I had come home from work early but she didn't know it yet. All our kids were in school, hers and mine, and weren't due home for another couple of hours.

I knew that her forehead was wrinkled in concentration as I heard her sigh over the latest phone bill her daughter had racked up.

"Going to get that girl her own phone," I heard her mutter, "then SHE can pay the damn bill!"

I grinned, having heard this every month for the last 2 years. It wasn't gonna happen. When she put down the pen and rubbed the spot between her eyes I tiptoed into the room.

"Good afternoon, my love," I whispered into her ear.

Jane jumped a little as she whipped around, "Lisa! My goodness what are you doing home? It's only 2 o'clock."

I grinned wickedly, "I was desperately in need of a fix of smooth soft skin, so I played hookey and ducked out. Owning the business does have some fringe benefits."

Jane laughed, "That's true but they can't do without you for long." ...
