"God, it's fucking hot in here," Rachel complained, loosening another button on her red blouse.

"I know, hon," replied Christy idly from the fridge. "You want some ice water?"

"Sure." Rachel reached for the remote on the coffee table as some lame commercial came on, and started channel-surfing. "And there's nothing on TV either," she added a few channels later as she stretched out on the three-cusion yard-sale sofa and yawned. "This sucks."

It was one of those days in the summer when the sun is scorching and there's not even a hint of a breeze outside, and just enough humidity to make the whole world feel like a giant pressure cooker. It didn't help that Christy's apartment still ran on a swamp cooler, which served only to raise the humidity without affecting the temperature.

Christy came back with two tall glasses of ice water, set them on the coffee table, then plopped down at the other end of the couch. "Go back to the game," she said.

Rachel switched the TV back to channel four. A local news anchor was yammering on about the heat wave and the danger to the elderly and so forth. The words "Special Report" were displayed prominently in the corner of the screen. ...
