I hate going out to bars. That's part of why I'm still single - picking up women in bars just doesn't come naturally to me. It feels too impersonal, too dishonest, to try and find a girlfriend in a situation which feels so focused on sex. I do like sex, mind you, so that's not the problem. The slutty girls are a turn-off, and the rest seem to be after the "what's your sign?" kind of guys. That leaves me, the art-major-sensitive-new-age-guy out of the loop.

I have a wide variety of friends, and from time to time I do end up out at a bar. I usually stick out like a sore thumb: all in black, shaved head, small, wire-rimmed glasses. Everyone else has their visors on backwards and inverted, every article of clothing blatantly advertises the brand name, and every color of the rainbow is accounted for. I do like the techno music, and the "meat-market" bars around her have strong drinks, so I can enjoy myself well enough. Good company, good drinks, and good music, but I'm always the one going home alone at the end of the night.

Last Wednesday, we all headed for The Roadhouse to celebrate the 30th birthday of a friend's coworker. 30 has always seemed really old, but now that I'm about to turn 28, it doesn't seem so far off...
