Gerry was a good man. At one time. This is my story. How I got to be what I am.

Gerry stepped into my office. It was the end of a long day at the dealership. Here I was acting sales manager of my dad's dealership, fresh from school, and I was facing the best salesman in the place, a man whom I'd known, and ‘loved' for twenty years. He was only seven years older than I, and we had always had a special place for each other. In fact, my dad had helped him through university with a guarantee of a job every time he had an hour to work, and then he'd come back to sell cars. "It's what I do well", he said. "I'm happy here."

Now I was his boss - Daddy's daughter was being given work experience! I had had the other salespeople in, but had left Gerry to the last. I could say I wasn't sure how to handle the situation.

He came in in his usual easy way and put me at ease right away. "If I close the door, can I still call you ‘Kid'?" he joked.

It was small talk for a while. I was conscious of us both, me, the boss's daughter, not overly pretty, rather petite, a good athlete, a good student, perhaps a bit slim in the hips, good chest and shoulders from the university sports.
