I'm in trouble. Serious trouble. Diane and I are sitting in the second row of tables at an important banquet and I can feel the fear creeping up my spine. As representatives of the law firm I work for, we are here to greet the new manager of the major employer in town, a company we represent in legal matters. None of the partners were able to go so Diane and I are it. The cause of that fear is sitting there at the head table. She hasn't seen me yet, but I'm going to be introduced to her before the evening's out. I feel sick. I hitch my chair around so I don't look directly at the head table.

"You all right, Rob?" It's Diane. She's got her antennas out. She knows me too well.

"Something I ate?" I lie. I want out of there.

She looks at me carefully. "Stick it out for a while. Maybe it will pass."

Don't I wish! How the hell can I get myself out of here? I just can't stand and leave without attracting everyone's attention. There should be a break around dessert time, before the speeches. Everyone will want a trip to the can.

It's a pleasant meal and the others at our table are nice enough, but my mind is on other things. A year in my life is flashing before my eyes ...
