RAYLENE Chapter 1

Raylene Jenkins looks at herself in the rear view mirror as she drives the last few miles home. She thinks sarcastically that she's surprised that her eyes aren't more bloodshot, what with all the tobacco and marijuana smoke that Avery and his friends put in the air tonight. As it is she's going to be in the shower a while scrubbing the smell of the smoke and the booze along with other things off her body. As she stops at a red light she lowers her forehead to the top of the steering wheel.

"God, how could I have let myself get in this mess?"

The stinging pain on her inner thigh causes her to sit back in the seat. She inspects herself again in the mirror and tries to turn the depression back with a mental joke, "Not bad for a loving wife and mother of three at 3:45 in the morning. Thank god I was able to get Shandra to let the kids sleep over at her place tonight. I don't think I could handle their questions this morning. Not after what Avery put me through tonight. I've got a much bigger problem arriving this evening when Denton's plane lands. How am I going to hide this from him? You bastard Avery, it wasn't bad enough that you tricked me into this shit. You won't stop until you've destroyed everything."
