Darren arrived at work early, as was his wont. He had always been an early riser, and usually took advantage of this fact to beat the morning rush hour. The M25 motorway was like a great slumbering beast that never truly woke to its full, evil, potential before about 7am, by which time Darren was usually safely in the office canteen, siphoning his first coffee of the day. He slipped the drinks sachet into the womblike embrace of the machine and pressed the start button. Water fizzed and hissed, then trickled into his waiting cup. The aroma of strong Italian coffee drifted up and tickled his nose, before a clunk from the machine indicated that it had finished. Removing his cup, he added a splash of milk and walked back to his office.

It was very quiet. His sleek silver BMW 740 was the only car parked outside the office, save for the creaky Vauxhall Frontera pool car that everybody hated. He reached over and flicked on his computer, reclining back in his executive chair to savour his coffee as he waited for the interminable boot-up process to complete.

The familiar Windows desktop disappeared under the Lotus Notes splash screen as the machine performed its start-up routines. He signed into the package out of habit, surprised to see an email already waiting for him. It was from Katherine Le Pon, the company's HR Director and its most dangerous employee.
