Children were running everywhere, dangling and cascading over the playground equipment, screaming at one another in bright tones, pleading to their parents to see their antics. On the grass surrounding the equipment, clumps of parents watched, waved, and yelled their support to the children at play. Tonight was the annual daycare picnic, held ritually on the longest, hottest night of the year. I stood alone, watching my son run and gesture fake weapons at the other boys, while the girls sat in little circles on the sand. I was the only single father out of the two dozen families at the daycare, and I hadn't much chance to meet the other parents in the past, so I occupied myself watching my son play.

A whistle from the picnic shelter signaled that the grills were ready. A few volunteer fathers were flipping burgers and turning hot dogs. Everyone queued up, grabbed a paper plate and plastic fork, prepared for the potluck dinner.

By the time Matt and I flowed through the line, most of the tables were already staked out. I figured I'd let Matt sit with whomever he wanted and I'd just follow him.

He found us a table, a crowded one in the center of the shelter, and we squeezed in the middle.
