Beth didn't last long. After their first encounter, she became hard to pin down on future meetings, and suggested that their relationship would be easier to manage if she moved downtown, near Tom's office. He agreed, and gave her the cash to fund the first month's rent, and a security deposit. That was the last time he saw her.

Only somewhat daunted, Tom kept chasing the telephone personal ads, looking for a source of sexual relief and fulfillment.
